Green Lab Urban Farm

The Green Lab Urban Farm is a project of the Long Beach Community Action Partnership’s Youth Programs. In partnership with the Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network, the Green Lab Project converted a 50 x 100 standard city lot in to an Urban Farmyard. In an 8-week work experience program during the summer of 2009, approximately 10 part time employees ranging in age from 14 – 19 years created an edible garden that boasts 11 4′ x 16′ raised beds, a half moon block planter, 40′ x 5′ vertical garden, a bee and butterfly garden, a monarch weigh station, composting bins, & worm bins. Two part time employees were hired to maintain and create a certified farm. Work has begun on a chicken coop for 20 hens, small barn, green house and edible drought tolerant borders. In the 1st quarter of 2010 we will break ground on a 1 acre strawberry farm and 4 drought tolerant and native demonstration gardens to promote front yard conversions for water conservation. The Green Lab Farm will also begin selling produce at a certified farmers market as an outreach program to elementary schools for good nutrition and a healthy eating campaign. The Green Lab will also begin hosting workshops for the community and tours.
